Welcomeand workshop introduction
Welcome to Day 1 of “A.B.C.D. model for writing learning outcomes” workshop!
In today's language classrooms, the term assessment usually evokes images of an end-of-course paper-and-pencil test designed to tell both teachers and students how much material the student doesn't know or hasn't yet mastered. However, assessment is much more than tests. Assessment includes a broad range of activities and tasks that teachers use to evaluate student progress and growth on a daily basis.Assessments can beformative or summative. Formative Assessment is given during the course, not at the end, so that learners can improve during the course. Formative Assessment comes in many forms, but always includes feedback. There may also be an overall score, but this is notessential. The feedback generally relates to only a few areas for learners to focus on and improve rather than on all of the learners' errors. Summative assessment occurs at the end of instruction, typically after a semester, course, or a few years in school.
School leaving exams are one example of a summative assessment. Learners often receive only a final score without feedback on what they have done wrong.

I am glad to represent a video«Using Assessment to Improve Instruction” by Bill Moore, Policy Associate for Assessment, Teaching &Learning Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. Inthem, Bill Moore addresses the following questions:
1.              How can we define assessment?
2.             What is the role of assessment in theclassroom?
3.             What is the relationship between assessmentand instruction?
4.              How can we use assessment to improve classroominstruction? Today’s discussion willaddress on following question:
5.   How can we define assessment?
6.   What is the role of assessment in theclassroom?

Inpreparing my lessons’ plans I devote much time to how I can estimate the
students’ learning outcomes in classroom. I know that the most important for
the teacher to have the clear picture of students’ learning results and to give
as the most objective assessment as it possible. But unfortunately I have never
met the unique system or methods of assessment in English language classroom.  Every teacher knows that assessment is theprocess of comparing actual results with the expected results of the student's
learning curriculum for the planning and further training organizationI agreewith the author of a video who talks about assessment as one of the factors
providing feedback, self-assessment of its achievements. It is necessary for
students to have real notion about how he was able to achieve the educational
goal in learning. Assessment helps to determine the level of each student at
each stage of the educational process.Aboutassessment I know what knows almost every average teacher we assess the students’
degree of mastering the curriculum.  And
more often we use formative assessment – current assessment of learning
achievements. Teacher conducted the formative assessment during the academic terms;
determines the current level of learning and skills in daily work in the
classroom in accordance with the curriculum, It allows students to understand
how well they are making tasks in the period of the study of new material. At
the end of the academic term teacher conducts the summative assessment when he summarizes
the results of work during the training period. In mylessons after the determination of educational goals I  determine the type of assessment students’
achievements in the classroom, I give criteria, for example, knowledge of new
words, grammatical tasks using the grammatical rules, drawing and playing a
dialogue with the required number of questions and answers, and so on. By using
the scorecard, self-assessment, pair assessment. Franklysaying assessment is much more difficult than the training itself.

Day 1 assignment
Question 1  -What do you already know about assessment and its types?
Unfortunately, I didn’t have a lot of information about lotsof successful ways of assessing students during my first year as a teacher. I
used summative assessment a lot but I understood that there had to be something
more effective than that.

Having five years of teaching practice now I’ve learnt a lotabout different types of assessment. I use both summative assessment (term
tests) and formative assessment (teacher observation, peer assessment,
portfolio, etc.) in my classroom.

Question 2 - What is the role of assessment inyour classroom?T
The  fact that I’m using formative assessment in my classroom helps me a lot. Usingthe teacher observation  technique I see not only the academic achievements of my student but alsointerpersonal relationship between them.
I also like to use peer assessment. It’s appropriate at the end of a brainstorming activity for example. Students exchange
their papers to check each other’s results. Feedback is extremely important.
When students make sad or happy faces after checking papers I understand who had
problems understanding the material and work with this student individually
after lessons.

I believe that formative assessment is of great importancefor the teacher to know how the students succeed and for the students to know
how they can improve. Here work the principles of interdependence, individual
accountability and interpersonal skills.

Assessment is simply the collection of information that indicates the learning progress of the students. This is followed by the process of evaluation, which judges if the collected data is up to the mark, or not. Both these stages are used to decide if the decision-making process needs to be altered to address the weaknesses in the education program. But, there are different types of assessment techniques, which have their uses at various stages of an academic program. Let us understand what these types of assessments are, along with some examples of each.
Formative assessment is carried out on a day-to-day basis, and is more important towards the beginning of a course, topic, semester, or other educational units. The purpose of this method is to give feedback to an instructor about the teaching and learning process. Based on the results of this assessment, he/she can either retain, modify, or discontinue the teaching method. As such, formative assessment helps educational authorities enhance their teaching strategy so that it is more effective. It is a low-stakes test, where the results are not used for grading students.
Examples of such an assessment include group discussions, observations, oral questions, and journals.Summative assessment. An assessment performed at the end of a course, unit, or year, is known as a summative assessment. Its purpose is to find out how much a student has learned, how effective the teaching methods have been, and make the required improvements in the next course. Summative assessments can also help the district authorities decide the effectiveness of their education programs. Basically, this method is used to give a measure of the student's success, reward his performance, and provide criteria for passing the student to the next stage. Therefore, it is a high-stakes test, which decides the final marking of students.
End-of-course tests, portfolios, project submissions, quizzes, final exams, and research reports, all come under this type of technique.
In the end of every academic term we do different tests and summarise our results. It helps to judge the level of my students

I think theassessment must increase students’ motivation, help them see their knowledge at
the present time or their progress and the way they must go to achieve the
purposes. Students become more responsible for their learning. The process of
teaching and learning become more effective. The students know what tasks they
need do to receive the mark they want. They try to do the tasks and they
receive the mark they want.  They are
more active, they are involved. They are happy, successful.  They feel themselves comfortable and more confident.
I think they learn to watch mistakes and correct them, learn to ask questions,
find out different ways of learning, learn to analyze and make a decision, they
develop their language skills. The value offormative assessment in that the teacher or the student mark the progress of
every student. The students are not afraid of making mistakes, they know they
have the opportunity tocorrect them.

Assessment isa direct way of learning our students' language skills. Assessment shows
learners' ability to use the language. A teacher should observe students
continually to determine their progress and level of language skills.
Formative assessment is used by teachers and students during
instruction, feedback to improve students' achievement.  We must
help students evaluate their progress in the learning languages and
regularly give them descriptive feedback. I agree that “good assessment
tasks are interchangeable  with good instructional
tasks” and “it needs to involve  useful
feedback to the person who needs to make the necessary changes or do something
about it.”   I know the following types of assessments:self-record keeping ( students mark the chart themselves, write reflexion when
they finish their work), peer feedback and assessment ( students correct  and assess the oral or written  work of their classmates or younger students),
portfolio (a collection of students works, help to see students’ progress).

When we talk about assessment, first of all, we meanwhat a student knows, is able to do, and is learning to do. Assessment is a
very important part of learning. Formativeassessment provides information during the instructional process, while learning process is taking place. The information helps teachers and students consider the additional opportunities needed ensure success. A primary focus of formative assessment is to identify areas that may need improvement. And I compare improvement with the student’s “previous best” (self-referenced, making learning more personal). Formative assessment involves the students. Summative assessment is used to quantifyachievements, to reward achievements. It is used at the end of a unit of teaching.
I use different tools of summative assessment such as examination, portfolios, projects, performances.
In myopinion, any type of assessment must be reliable and have a good influence on
students and process of learning.

Assessment is the measurement of what students are learning. It'simportant both  students andteachers.  Formative assessmentcontributes to learning through providing feedback. Effective formative feedback will affect what the student and the teacher does next. Every teacher must measure students. Assessment helps to indicate their progress. Formative assessment can improve students’ success. Every lesson I evaluate students.
Students usually reflect about their practice and answer the questions:
"What did I learn today?" "What did I do well?"  Summative assessment is more productsoriented and assess final product.  Thetypes of summative assessment I do with my students are projects, examinations,
term papers.

Various definitions of assessment can be found. Here just some of them  where we can see the different role  it plays in teaching and learning: Assessment involves the use of empirical data on student learning to refine programs and improve student learning.  (AssessingAcademic Programs in Higher Education by Allen 2004) Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning.  (Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses:shifting the focus from teaching to learning by Huba and Freed                                                                       Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students.  It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase
students’ learning and development.  (Assessing Student Learning andDevelopment: A Guide to the Principles, Goals, and Methods of Determining College Outcomes by Erwin 1991)  The best what I can do just simply agree that assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning and development
.

Question 1  -What do you already know about assessment and its types?

There are different typesof assessment.Prior to beginning either a school-wide program or developing an
intervention plan for a particular student, it is critically important to have
assessment data.  There are 4 types of reading assessments, for example, that comprise a
comprehensive reading assessment plan.  Each type of assessment is
important in its own right and provides valuable information to school
teams.
Question 2 - What is the role of assessment in your classroom?T

All the processes involved inmaking decisions about students’ learning progress. It’s more than just grades
and tests.  Therole of assessmentis really great and important.. There is a cycle of planning, teaching, and assessing that
insures students are learning.

The assessment is the wide variety of methods or tools that teacher use to
evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress,
skill acquisition, or educational needs of students. We have educational programs, which have different ratings of assessment’s system. The assessment is an integral part of learning process and teachers make it
continually during the lesson. It can be formative assessment (the general
purpose is to give educators feedback about what students are learning or not
learning and it may have a variety of forms (quizzes, questioning techniques,
in-class discussions and etc.); summative assessment ( is used to evaluate
student learning at the end of a specific instructional period and it can be a
test or a progress check); standardized assessment ( is administrated and scored
in a standard  -state exams)
I use these assessments in my lessons. It can have different forms (“exit slip”-a quick
end-of-the-class quiz, “minute paper”-a quick summary of learning, “sticking point”
provides feedback –discussing of left unanswered questions, observation,
portfolio,  tests, vocabulary dictations
and etc.) Of course, all assessments are related to the certain age and
individual skills of students. The assessment is always “stress” for students and in my opinion we should reduce this statement, make the assessment more neutral.

To start with, I’m really grateful to the organizers of this online course to choose one of the most actual problems in the teaching and learning process.
What do you already know about assessment and itstypes?
We do use assessment every lesson we give, otherwise it isn’t a lesson but a meeting for pleasure. I define assessment as the measurement of what students are learning. It provides us with both objective and subjective data in order to ascertain student progress. As far as I know, four types of assessments are being practiced at school: diagnostic, interim, formative and summative. Each of them has its own functions.

What is the role of assessment in your classroom? The role ofassessment in my classroom is hard to overestimate.  It appears in different forms but it has two goals: to check progress and to encourage students. Formative assessment in this sense is optimal. My colleagues have already mentioned many of the ways assessment is introduced at the lesson (special thanks to elenaVRU for some bright ideas:).
As for summative one, I can advise a rating  at the end of the term or academic year. It can be called “Best students” project. My kids just love to watch a video with the best students in English from different classes, to learn about their success in the ubject and to listen to the interview with them.

Using assessment we focus our attention on improving how well we teach a given lesson, as well as evaluating student learning.
Assessment can serve many functions. It can be diagnostic and helps to determine student learning, their knowledge or skills. It can be used to assess the effectiveness of an instructional strategy. It allows to identify the success of activities, assignments, and even courses as a whole. We can use Formative assessment or checking for understanding. Its purpose is to give us feedback on how well students are following the lesson. If the formative assessment shows students are understanding the lesson, the teacher can feel they are free to move forward, while if the formative assessment reveals students are confused, the teacher can go over material again as needed.
Summative assessment is used atthe end of instruction. Its importance is to determine how well the lesson was designed and delivered as well as how well students learned. If acouple of students have difficulties in completing the assessment, we can identify means for providing additional individual instruction. If many students have difficulties, we need to analyze the lesson design and delivery to determine what went wrong.
It is useful to include some timefor peer-assessment when the children have the chance toview somebody else's work and evaluate it.
Portfolio is an assessment formcontaining samples of the students` work and shows growth over time.
Assessment can give us tons of ideas for providing motivation and helping create an appropriate learning.
